UConn Star Sprinter Is All About Winning

Another Big East Conference Championship, another sprint-double title. This has been the recurring theme for Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, the University of Connecticut (UConn) junior who said she simply doesn’t like to lose. After finishing second in the 60m and 200m indoors in her first conference championships as a freshman, Hawthorne vowed never to lose another individual title. So far, she has lived by that script and has claimed over 10 such titles. Last weekend at the NCAA East Regional, Hawthorne booked her ticket to Eugene, Oregon, for the NCAA Championships June 9 to 12. She will compete for the 100m title. The Jamaican-born Hawthorne, who has a lifetime best of 11.40 secs in the 100m and 23.33 in the 200m, has inscribed her name on all of UConn’s indoor and outdoor sprint records; from the 55m to the 200m. Grenada’s Kirani James Leads The Crimson Tide into Oregon

For many 17-year-olds, the month of June is synonymous with high school proms and graduations, but for Kirani James, June 9 to 12 means NCAA Outdoor Championships and the opportunity for more glory. Kirani, the Gouyave, Grenada native is not your regular 17-year-old; he’s the reigning 2010 SEC Conference Outdoor Freshman of the Year. His prior major accomplishments include the World Youth Championships 200m and 400m titles. Now, with a lifetime best 45.01 secs in the 400m, Kirani heads to the championships in Eugene, Oregon not only as a University of Alabama (Alabama) Crimson Tide but also as a favorite in the quarter mile. Alabama’s Kim Laing Eyes All-American Status at NCAAs

“I am very excited about going to Eugene,” said Kim Laing, the University of Alabama (Alabama) graduate student. “I have never been to Oregon and I have a good chance of being an All-American if I can only finish in the top eight.” Eugene, Oregon is the site for the 2010 NCAA Championships that began yesterday and end June 12. Now in her final year of eligibility, Kim has saved the best for last by capturing the SEC Conference 60m hurdles indoor title (8.23 secs) and the 100m hurdles outdoor title (13.32 secs). The Jamaican native punched her ticket to Oregon by running a lifetime best 12.92 secs for 5th place in the 100m hurdles, at the May 29 NCAA East Regional, dipping below 13 seconds for the first time in her career. James, Sorrillo, Evans Headline Caribbean Success at NCAAs

Led by outstanding performances by Grenada’s Kirani James, Trinidad & Tobago’s (T&T) Rondel Sorrillo and Bermuda’s Aaron Evans, Caribbean athletes sparkled at the NCAAs in Eugene, Oregon last weekend. James, the University of Alabama freshman, captured the men’s 400m in 45.05 secs. Days before the NCAAs, James expressed his desire to perform well but was not concern about times. The Texas A&M pair of Demetrius Pinder 45.56 (Bahamas) and Tabarie Henry 45.92 (US Virgin Islands) placed 6th and 8th, respectively. Rondel Sorrillo, the University of Kentucky (Kentucky) senior capped a superb college career by capturing the men’s 200m in 20.36 secs to become Kentucky’s first 200m NCAA champion. South Plains Add Jamaican Stamina to its Line-up

Jamaica’s middle-distance runners Kemoy Campbell and Natoya Goule are settling down at their new address: South Plains College in Texas. Campbell and Goule, both 19 years old, are established runners in the Caribbean region, at the junior level, and both have amassed numerous medals at the CARIFTAGames Campbell with a personal best 3:42.57 (1500m) and 8:44.72 (3,000m) was heavily recruited by numerous colleges in the US before he selected South Plains. Goule has a personal best 54.03 in the 400m and 2:03.52 in the 800m. Both Campbell and Goule join the Texan, a team that is loaded with talent, and they should feel right at home as the Texan roster has several Caribbean athletes. Caribbean Tracklife Magazine (CTL) caught up with Blaine Wiley, the associate head coach for the Texan.
