K’Don Samuels transfers from South Plains College

K’Don Samuels, the 22 year-old Jamaican pole vault record-holder has transferred from South Plains College (Texans), in Texas to an unnamed school in the Northeast. Samuels, the former Jamaica College standout has shown marked improvement in his first year at South Plains College highlighted by him setting the Jamaican national senior pole vault record mark of 5.31m. Samuels established the mark of 5.31m in April 2012 at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, erasing the old mark of 5.30m held by Jabari Ennis for over 10 years. “I am surprised and disappointed with his decision to leave the program, as we have laid out a plan for him to have a great 2013 season” said Coach Blaine Wiley. “We are aware that K’Don has to make decision that’s in his best interest, and I wish him all the best.” Samuels, who also holds the Jamaica national junior pole vault record of 4.80m, became the first Jamaican high school athlete to capture the pole vault title at the 2009 Penn Relays.
