]Perhaps the next great female sprinter from the Caribbean is Trinidad and Tobago’s own Michelle-Lee Ahye. After capping a great indoor season at the world indoor championship where she ran a personal best time of 7.10 seconds in the 60m, the 22 year-old has now taken her exploits outdoors. This past weekend at the Ponce Grand Prix (Ponce IWC) in Puerto Rio, Michelle ran a personal best time of 11.04 seconds in the 100m to beat a very competitive field. Her time of 11.04 seconds is the 2nd fastest time in the world so far this season. Only Jamaica’s Samantha Henry-Robinson has gone faster with a world leading time of 11.00 seconds.
In an interview with TrackLedger.com (TL) at the Penn Relays back in April, Michelle outlined her goals for the 2014 season:
TL: How do you feel about being at the Penn Relays?
Michelle: I am feeling pretty good, I am happy about the place [finish] that we did and the time… even thought it was a young team, I am still proud of them.
TL: This year you are doing pretty good; you ran a personal best 11.17 recently… you are really excelling. How is training going? And what are you doing differently this year?
Michelle: I am doing more distance [work] in my training program… I am more motivated in practice… keeping focus… so it’s helping me a lot.
TL: What are your expectations this year? Are you looking forward to the World Relays in the Bahamas and the Trinidadian Trials that are coming up?
Michelle: I am looking forward to everything that’s coming up this year.., the World Relays, the Trials back home [Trinidad] and I am looking to make the Finals and be on the podium for the Commonwealth Games… I am really excited about this year…
TL: What do you attribute your improvement to? Here you are running so fast times, you are putting your name out there… you are in the discussions… people are actually talking about you being the next great sprinter from the Caribbean.
Michelle: It’s time for me to make a name for myself and to let people know what I am capable of. I thank my coach for making me run so fast this year… everybody should just look out for me running some blistering times in the 100 and the 200 this year.
TL: Thanks Michelle
