One of Jamaica’s most prolific junior sprinters, Jhevaughn Matherson, is now a Florida State (FSU) Seminole. Eighteen-year-old Matherson is now enrolled at FSU as reported by Jamaica news media outlet RJR News. Matherson, who has personal best times of 10.25 seconds (100m) and 20.66 seconds (200m), is coming off a mixed 2017 season. After showing signs of brilliance, his season ended in disappointment as injuries prevented him from showcasing his skills at the 2017 Boys and Girls Champs. Matherson’s departure from Jamaica is a great loss for Kingston College (KC), which was relying on Matherson’s leadership and experience to challenge Calabar High school dominance of Boys Champs in recent years.
Coaching Change
After a summer filled with uncertainty regarding his continued enrollment at KC as well as changes in his coaching situation, Matherson is perhaps seeking a fresh start beyond the shores of Jamaica. Matherson was arguably the best junior pure sprinters on the island, his form and execution are poetry in motion. However, injury has plagued Matherson throughout his years in high school at KC.
In early September 2017, the decision was made for Matherson to be coached by Glen Mills, the head coach at Racers Track Club while continuing his education in Sixth Form at KC. Mills is the coach of legendary sprinter and world-record holder Usain Bolt. This arrangement would not have prevented Matherson participation for the upcoming 2018 track season for KC. However, despite this great arrangement Matherson decided to leave Jamaica. It must be pointed out that Matherson is an excellent student-athlete with the emphasis on “student”.
What Florida State is Getting?
FSU is getting a college-ready student who is excellent in the classroom as well on the track. They are also getting a proven leader and winner. If FSU can solve Matherson injury-prone problem, then NCAA sprinting titles are within reach.
