The 2019 Diamond League series came to a crescendo in Brussels on Friday, September 6 when total of sixteen athletes were crowned Diamond League champions.
Lyles and Norman shine in the 200m and 400m
In the men’s 200m, Noah Lyles of the USA posted 19.74 to finish ahead of Ramil Guliyev of Azerbaijan, who sped to 19.86 and Andre Degrasse of Canada who was edged out in third in a time of 19.87. This was Lyles third victory on the Diamond League circuit this season after posting victories in Lausanne (19.50) and Paris (19.65). For his efforts Lyles was crown 200m Diamond League winner.
American Michael Norman overcame a strong field to turn the tables on his compatriot Fred Kerley and ahead of the twenty-one-year-old Jamaican, Akeem Bloomfield. Norman posted a time of 44.26, while Kirley and Bloomfield posted 44.46 and 44.67, respectively.
Spain’s Ortega wins
Orlando Ortega of Spain finished atop the podium in the men’s 110m hurdles in a brisk 13.23 to get the better of Jamaica’s Ronald Levy and Russia’s Sergey Shubenkok, who posted 13.31 and 13.33, respectively. Ortega was crowned Diamond League champion for his effort. The American Freddie Crittenden was fourth in 13.35 while Daniel Roberts did not start.
Cheruiyot and Getnet go the distance
In the men’s 1500m, Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya was crowned Diamond League champion. He posted 3:30:22 to defeat the Norwegian brothers Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Filip Ingebrigtsen, who posted 3:31:62 and 3:33:33, respectively.
The men’s 3000m steeplechase was won by the Ethiopian Getnet Wale in 8:06:92. Souflane El Bakkali was second in 8:07:08 while the Ethiopian Lamecha Girma was third in 8:07:66.
Other men’s results
Christian Taylor of the USA was the winner in the men’s triple Jump with a distance of 17.85 metres. The next three places were also held firmly by the Americans Will Claye (17.22), Omar Craddock (17.17) and Donald Scott (17.14).
Tom Walsh of New Zealand took top honor in the men’s shot put; he threw a distance of 22.30 metres to finish ahead of the Brazilian Darlan Romani (22.15m) and the American Ryan Crouser (22.08).
In the men’s Discus, Daniel Stahl of Sweden was the winner, throwing a distance of 68.68 metres. Lukas Wiesshaidnger was second with an effort of 66.03 metres while Fredrick Dacres of Jamaica was third with 65.27 metres.
Asher-Smith and Wilson victorious
Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain won the women’s 100m in a season’s best of 10.88 to crown herself Diamond League champion in this event. And this she did to upset the favorite Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who finished second in 10.95. Marie-Jose Ta Lou was third in 11.08.
The women’s 800m was won by the American Ajee Wilson in 2:00:24 to secure the Diamond League title in this event, while compatriot Raevyn Rodgers was second in 2:00:68. Winnie Nonyondo of Uganda was third in 2:00:69. The Jamaican Natoya Goule placed fifth in 2:01:40.
The amazing Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the women’s 5000 metres in 14:26:26 to become Diamond League champion in this event. Letedenbet Gidey of Ethiopia was second in 14:29:54 while the German Konstanze Klostherhalfen was third in 14:29:89
Jamaica’s Danielle crowned sprint hurdles champion
The women’s 100 metres hurdles event created much fireworks and went true to form. As she did in Zurich, the Jamaican Danielle Williams destroyed a quality field, stopping the clock in 12.46. Williams was able to establish clear distance between herself and the American pair of Kendra Harrison and Nia Ali who finished in times of 12.73 and 12.74, respectively.
Other results
Mariya Lasitskene (ANA) won the women’s high jump, with a leap of 1.98 metres, to become the Diamond League champion this event. Yuliya Levchenko of the Ukraine and Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium were second and third with jumps of 1.97 metres and 1.95 metres, respectively.
The Diamond League champion in the women’s pole vault was Ekaterini Stefanidi of Greece, who cleared 4.83 metres. The Authorized Neutral Athlete, Anzhelika Sidorova was second in a similar 4.83 metres while the Canadian Alysha Newman was third in 4.77 metres.
The German Malaika Mihambo won the long jump event with a mark of 7.03 metres to become the Diamond League champion. Brittney Reece of the USA was second with 6.85 metres while Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain was third with 6.73 metres.
Yaime Perez of Cuba won the women’s Discus in 68.27 metres to become Diamond League champion. Sandra Perkovic of Croatia was second with a throw of 66 metres while Kristin Prudenz of Germany was third with 63.73 metres.
