The 128th staging of the Penn Relays took place at the University of Pennsylvania, Franklin Field Stadium, from Thursday, April 25 to Saturday, April 27. As has become customary, the Jamaican high schools dominated the 3-day relay carnival. Hydel High School (girls), Jamaica College, Kingston College and Excelsior High all posted impressive victories in their respective Championship of America relay races. The Jamaican high-schooler also performed very well in the field events. Credit should also be given to Union Catholic (New Jersey) and the Bullis School (Maryland), two of the numerous US high school that provided some intriguing competition. We cannot overlook the outstanding performance of 16-year-old Quincy Wilson (Bullis School- MD) who posted split of 44.37 in the boys 4x400 relay.
High School Girl’s 4 x 100m Championship of America Final
The Hydel quartet of Shemonique Hazel, Alliah Baker, Shania Myers and Jody-Ann Daley won the high school girl’s 4 x 100m Championship of America Final in 44.71. This was Hydel’s second consecutive win in the event. The Edwin Allen quartet of Trezeguet Taylor, Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, Renecia Edwards and Jounee Armstrong was second in 44.96, while the St. Jago quartet of Briana Campbell, Adora Campbell, Bryana Davidson and Quanna Walker was third in 45.14. The field was rounded-out by Archbishop John Carroll in 45.15, Wolmer’s Girls in 45.37, Holmwood Technical High School in 45.77, IMG Academy in 46.14, St. Mary High School in 46.17 and Union Catholic in 46.19.
High School Girl’s 4 x 400m Championship of America Final
The Hydel quartet of Jody-Ann Daley, Abigail Campbell, Nastassia Fletcher and Alliah Baker won the high school girl’s 4 x 400m Championship of America Final in 3:34.78. Indeed, this was Hydel’s third consecutive win in the event. The Bullis quartet of Tatum Lynn, Sydney Sutton, Kennedy Brown and Morgan Rothwell was second in 3:15.17, while the Union Catholic quartet of Taylor Aska, Sydney Chadwick, Abriyah Thompson and Rhia Randolph was third in 3:41.75. The field was rounded out by Edwin Allen in 3:43.62, St. Elizabeth Technical High in 3:45.06, Timber Creek in 3:46.96, Wolmer’s Girl’s in 3:48.83 and Vere Technical in 3:49.50.
High School Girl’s 4 x 800m Championship of America Final
The Union Catholic quartet of Jimmiea King, Peyton Hollis, Sophia Thompson and Paige Sheppard posted 8:41.20, to win the high school girl’s 4 x 800m Championship of America Final. In second position was the Hydel (JAM) quartet of Tanesia Gardiner, Monique Stewart, Kevongaye Fowler and Rickeisha Simms that stooped the clock in 8:50.76, while the South Lakes quartet of Aya Ryan, Catalina Simon, Bella Harsanyi and Caroline Elliot finished third in 8:50.89. The field was rounded out by Padua Academy in 8:55.59, Holmwood Technical High School (JAM) in 8:58.94, IMG Academy in 9:00.72, Mount Tabor in 9:02.36, Rumson-Fair Haven in 9:07.99, Alphansus Davis (JAM) in 9:13.83, Upper Dublin in 9:16.34, Guilderland in 9:19.65 and Lower Moreland in 9:27.47.
High School Boy’s 4 x 100m Championship of America Final
The Excelsior quartet of Ryeem Walker, Damor Miller, Malike Nugent and Lennon Green won the high school boy’s 4 x 100m Championship of America final in 40.45, while Kingston College was second in 40.53 and Herbert Morrison was third in 40.56. The field was rounded-out by Archbishop John Carroll in 40.68, Calabar High School in 40.76, St. Jago High School in 40.92, St. George’s College in 41.60, West Springfield in 41.62 and Jamaica College in 41.76.
High School Boy’s 4 x 400m Championship of America Final
The Kingston College quartet of Antonio Forbes, Amal Glasgow, Roshawn Lee and Marcinho Rose clocked 3:11.86, to win the high school boy’s Championship of America, while the Excelsior quartet of Kishawn Hoffman, Demarco Bennett, Shaque Shand and Daneil Wright was second in 3:12.94 and the Bullis School quartet of Julian Robertson, Colin Abrams, Cameron Horner and Quincy Wilson posted 3:13.10 for third. The field was rounded-out by Bishop McNamara in 3:15.29, Jamaica College in 3:15.69, Dematha Catholic in 3:18.41, Hayfield in 3:18.86, Toms River North in 3:20.46 and St. Elizabeth Technical High in 3:21.01.
High School Boy’s 4 x 800m Championship of America Final
The Jamaica College quartet of Nellie Anderson, Samuel Creary, Rasheed Pryce and Kemarrio Bygrave stopped the clock in 7:42.37, to win the high school boy’s 4 x 800m Championship of America final, while the St. John’s College quartet of Paul Robinson, Karil Arnold, Finley Tobin and Keenan Frisby was second in 7:44.66 and the Central Bucks West quartet of Richard Newell, Nathan Terry, Ben Fuhrmeister and Nate Fehrman was third in 7:45.99. The field was rounded-out by Christian Brothers in 7:47.30, Council Rock North in 7:47.38, Kingston College in 7:49.65, Cherokee in 7:50.31, Newburgh Free in 7:52.03, Lake Braddock in 7:52.41, West Orange in 7:58.72, Toms River North in 8:01.52 and Woodbridge in 8:19.53.
Field Events
Chavez Penn of Jamaica College won the high school boy’s triple jump Championship of America with a jump of 15.38m (-0.9), while his team-mates Balvin Israel and Shaiquan Dunn won the high school boy’s long jump and shot put with 7.24m (-0.2) and 20.73m, respectively.
